One of the tenets of blogging is that you need to use your own voice. It needs to be personal. It’s strange that this point must be made, but the sad reality is that many of us hide our personalities in our business lives.
I’m certainly guilty of it. I have hidden. I’ve worked in companies where I left like I wasn’t free to be me. When I was out of the office networking, I felt better about myself, but I was trapped in another persona when I left.
Freedom of expression is not some nebulous Constitutional concept; it makes you feel productive and effective in your work. If you feel constrained, it’s time to stage a little revolution.
Start by writing. Write about your business theories, your philosophies, daily observations, whatever gets you going. Just write something on a regular basis. You’ll find that you’ll start to develop a better concept of what you really want to do and where you should be. It’s helped me face up to the fact that I was not really suited to do the jobs I was trying to do.
As an added bonus, you’ll have a nice little stash of topics for speeches, blogs or articles. Happy writing!
