At times, I find myself in a networking rut. I see the same people at the same events at the same groups. It’s at these times that I try to be “the new person.”
If you’re really smart, you’ll go somewhere completely unrelated to your industry and outside your comfort level. As an example, I am a semi-frequent visitor to the IT Council. I know very little about IT, but I’m the only marketing consultant in the room. Every time I go, I learn something new, meet new people and offer an alternate viewpoint. I even have gotten some business from the group. Shocked?
Keep your networking efforts fresh. There’s that old saying: Do what you have always done, and you will get what you’ve always got. You’re better than that! Go somewhere new soon.
