At times, I find myself in a networking rut.  I see the same people at the same events at the same groups.  It’s at these times that I try to be “the new person.”     Fire up your favorite search engine and look for some networking opportunities.  There are plenty of groups out there.  Pick a couple and visit once or twice.The beauty of going to a new place is that you’ll find a whole lot of people who aren’t in your current circle.  They know a whole lot of people who aren’t in your current circle.  You get lots of attention and the opportunity to make new connections.

If you’re really smart, you’ll go somewhere completely unrelated to your industry and outside your comfort level.  As an example, I am a semi-frequent visitor to the IT Council.  I know very little about IT, but I’m the only marketing consultant in the room.  Every time I go, I learn something new, meet new people and offer an alternate viewpoint.  I even have gotten some business from the group.  Shocked?

Keep your networking efforts fresh.  There’s that old saying: Do what you have always done, and you will get what you’ve always got.  You’re better than that!  Go somewhere new soon.
